It is normal that we love our dogs with all our hearts since they are incredible animals that give us all their love at all times. However, not everything is always rosy.
If you have a French Bulldog, you know that these dogs are extraordinary due to their beautiful, loving and cuddly personalities. They are canines that will always be by your side and show you their love in many ways.
It’s impossible not to love French Bulldogs, but sadly, they bring with them a problem related to their smell. This breed of dog is characterized by often farting, resulting in a nuisance not only for the members of their human family but also for other people who visit the house.
Reasons Why French Bulldogs Fart a Lot
As we have already said, French Bulldogs are prone to farting often. Although this situation is not due to any health problem or disease, you will surely want to reduce this smelly habit since it is not nice that a stinky smell attacks your nose while sitting quietly in the room.
Some of the most common reasons why this dog tends to fart are:
This breed of dog is characterized by having a brachycephalic nature. That means that they are animals that are distinguished by their short, flat face and small nose. These physical traits make French Bulldogs unable to breathe easily.
Due to that same situation, they are prone to accumulate air inside their bodies by chewing while eating. The air passes through their digestive system and is then expelled through their butt in the form of flatulence.
That usually happens because French Bulldogs eat and drink very quickly. These actions cause these canines to swallow a large amount of air that is stored in their intestines, forming gases.
Food is one of the main reasons why these dogs fart. An improper diet will undoubtedly cause a lot of flatulence in your French Bulldog.
For example, a common cause is excessive consumption of carbohydrates. There are some dog foods that contain a lot of carbohydrates, and excessive consumption of them can cause flatulence. That is why you must be careful not to give your French Bulldog food scraps.
There are certain foods that are not healthy for these dogs and can also cause gas, such as:
- Dairy products
- Fermentable foods
The same will happen if the diet of our French Bulldog is based on high fibre content. Foods that have a lot of fibre take longer to be digested, so they tend to ferment and thus produce gases.
In the same way, we must avoid giving our French Bulldog spicy, spoiled or junk food.
Lack of Exercise
French Bulldogs are canines that do not have a high energy level, so they do not require many hours of daily exercise. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t provide any physical activity.
Keep in mind that French Bulldogs are prone to obesity as they love to eat absolutely anything in sight. Obesity is one of the common causes why not only people but also dogs fart.
In addition to a balanced diet, you should exercise your French Bulldog a few minutes a day to help it stay healthy and fit.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Excessive flatulence is a common symptom of gastrointestinal disorders in French Bulldogs. A French Bulldog, for example, could have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is caused by an increase of inflammatory cells in the gastrointestinal tract, disrupting healthy flora.
This may result in a bacterial overgrowth that will impair the intestines’ uptake of nutrients, resulting in symptoms such as:
- Weight loss
- Protein loss
How to Avoid or Reduce Flatulence in French Bulldogs?
You must know the factors that are causing your French Bulldog to constantly fart and, based on that, act to solve the problem:
- Although we cannot prevent our French Bulldog from swallowing air while eating or drinking water, we can provide them with adequate food. Make sure to give it high-quality food that does not have ingredients or components that cause gas. The BARF diet is a great choice for these dogs as it is based on raw meat, vegetables and fruit.
- Give your French Bulldog exercise every day. A short walk to the park will suffice to meet its daily exercise needs. This will keep it fit and not overweight, which is one of the reasons why these dogs fart.
- You must be aware of any health problems that your dog may suffer. Take it to the vet frequently to make sure it is in excellent condition and in good health. We have already said that this breed can suffer from inflammatory bowel disease that can cause various symptoms, including flatulence.
- These dogs eat everything in their path, so it is essential that you keep human food and garbage away from them.
