What Dog Can Kill a Lion?

Many people on this planet think that a dog can kill a lion. This is an exciting topic that many dog lovers come up with for discussion.

Unfortunately, those people are wasting time debating which of these two animals would win. We don’t have to be smart to know that a dog doesn’t stand a chance of killing a lion unless other canines accompany it.

What Dog Can Kill a Lion

Lions are animals with large, robust, and compact bodies that are not only characterized by their great strength and speed but also by their huge and powerful mouths and sharp teeth.

Remember that this wild animal is known as the king of the jungle, and one of the main reasons for that is that almost any other animal cannot defeat it. The loud and imposing roar of a lion scares any other creature that is nearby.

It is true that there are a few dog breeds that equal or exceed a lion in terms of the strength of its bite. For example, the bite force of a lion is 650 pounds/square inch (PSI), while that of the Cane Corso, Bandog, and Kangal dogs is 700 PSI, 730 PSI, and 743 PSI, respectively.

However, the fact that the bite force of these dogs is greater than that of a lion does not mean that they can kill it easily. The lion remains a superior dog in determination, body strength, speed, endurance, and savagery.

Now, it’s important to note that while a dog can’t kill a lion, it can still take on a lion, although that will depend a lot on the breed. Obviously, you can’t expect a Pug to beat a lion in combat. However, there are certain other dog breeds that can stand up to this ferocious and wild animal.

How Can a Dog Kill a Lion?

Before knowing the breeds of dogs that can face a lion, it is important to emphasize again that a canine cannot kill a lion on its own.

The only way for a lion to die in battle is to be attacked by multiple dogs at once. These canines must belong to breeds large and strong enough and with powerful bites; otherwise, they will not have any chance of killing this wild animal.

The breeds of dogs we will show in this article have the fighting instinct and self-protection necessary to face a lion regardless of the results.

What Breeds of Dogs Can Face a Lion?

As we have already said, some breeds of dogs are capable of facing a lion but not killing it. Some of them are:

Tibetan Mastiff

This is one of the largest and most imposing dog breeds that we can find. Their great size and strength make them powerful animals that could fight almost any other land animal, including lions.

These dogs were bred to protect their families, livestock, and homes against predators. They were also trained to be excellent hunting dogs.

A Tibetan Mastiff could weigh up to 150 lbs. and measure up to 29 inches. Obviously, a dog with the size and strength of this breed could take on a lion. It is unlikely that it could kill a lion on its own, as we said at the beginning.

However, the Tibetan Mastiff is perhaps the only breed that could do battle for a long time with a lion and even seriously injure it.

Keep in mind that these dogs have an abundant mane that serves as protection against bites from any animal, including lions. Although its bite force is less than a lion’s, its fur allows it to strategically fight long enough to injure this savage animal.

One of the most distinctive characteristics of these dogs is their extraordinary bite. Kangals have the highest bite force among all these dogs.

These animals can grow up to 32 inches long and weigh up to 140 lbs. Kangals’ bodies are muscular and powerful and have enough stamina to withstand a battle with other powerful dogs.

They protect their owners but are distant from strangers, so it can be dangerous to leave them alone with our neighbors or anyone else who is not part of our family.

Kangals have a bite force of 742 PSI which is higher than that of a lion (650 PSI). Obviously, this does not mean that a dog of this breed can kill a lion on its own since other factors play an important role in a fight between these two animals.

Fila Brasileiro

This breed of dog was born in Brazil, and from its origin, it was bred to hunt and work. The Fila Brasileiro is an intelligent dog that is also characterized by its robust body, determination, and courage.

These very active and energetic dogs need to expend their daily energy through exercise and other activities.

They are very fast canines that can fight with certain wild animals. However, it will take about 5 dogs of this breed to fight a lion and have a chance of killing it.

Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino is a large, muscular, and powerful dog that can grow up to 27 inches and weigh up to 100 lbs. It is a dog with certain physical characteristics similar to those of an American Pitbull Terrier and American Bulldog.

The body of a Dogo Argentino has the ability to withstand combat against large animals. It is not afraid of anything, so fighting a lion is something it will not hesitate to do.

However, a fight between the two animals will be detrimental to the Dogo Argentino since the lion surpasses it in everything despite all its abilities and physical characteristics.

Neapolitan Mastiff

This dog from Italy is known for its large and powerful body. Any animal would be scared just by seeing a Neapolitan Mastiff.

This breed can reach a size of up to 31 inches and a weight of up to 150 lbs. An interesting fact about the Neapolitan Mastiff is that it was used as a gladiator dog to strike fear into its opponents during the Roman Empire.

In fact, it was also used to fight lions during that time. If a Neapolitan Mastiff is provoked, it could be dangerous to any person or animal.

Although its bite force (552 PSI) is not greater than that of a lion, it could still fight that wild animal as long as it is accompanied by other dogs with similar characteristics.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a strong dog that can reach speeds of 300 miles per hour. It is considered one of the breeds with the best abilities to be good hunters and guardians.

These dogs were used to chase and catch other wild animals. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is strong enough to fight a lion, but that doesn’t mean this dog can kill it.
